Sorenstam and Wie saw their hopes of a final showdown ended |
Top seeds Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wie were knocked out of the Women's World Match Play Championship in New Jersey in quarter-final upsets. Sorenstam was shocked by American Juli Inkster, who birdied four of the last five holes to card a 1-up victory.
Hawaiian teenager Wie, the second seed behind Sorenstam, lost to unfancied American Brittany Lincicome 4&3.
And experienced Australian Karrie Webb won just one hole as she crashed out 3&2 to another teenager, Paula Creamer.
Mexican third seed Lorena Ochoa saw her match go to form as she advanced to the semi-finals with a 3&2 win over Sweden's Sophie Gustafson.
Creamer will now face Inkster in Sunday's semi-finals at Hamilton Farm while Lincicome will meet Ochoa.

The winners then go head-to-head for the $500,000 prize later on Sunday.
Sorenstam and Inkster were locked together right up until the final hole but there the world number one missed an eight-foot putt while Inkster holed from six feet to claim victory.
"Juli played really well on the back nine," Sorenstam said. "I'm happy with the way I played. I couldn't have done much more."
Inkster said: "I made some great shots and put some pressure on her. It's a great win."
Wie, who earlier beat South Korean Se Ri Pak in the fourth round, could not mount a challenge against Lincicome.
The 20-year-old won the fourth, fifth, 10th and 13th holes to stretch Wie, 16, and wrapped up victory at the 15th.
"I felt I played really well but just got a few bad breaks," Wie said, who will play on the men's tour at the John Deere Classic next week.
"I feel my game's very solid and I think that I will do very well next week."
