Henrik Stenson leads the Asian Open by one shot after carding a five-under-par 67 in the first round on Thursday.

He is one shot ahead of Scotland's Stephen Gallacher and Jean Van de Velde of France in Shanghai.

Colin Montgomerie shot a 69 after hitting his second shot at the 18th into the water on the way to his only bogey of the round.

"I was in a position to take the lead and then I mess it up, which is very disappointing," said Montgomerie.

The veteran Scot had earlier been irritated by noisy spectators and photographers who strayed into his line of sight.

Players level with Montgomerie on three under include included Irishman Peter Lawrie, South Korea's Charlie Wi, Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and Frankie Minoza of the Philippines.

Scotland's former Open champion Paul Lawrie is a shot further back, as is his countryman Scott Drummond.

England's Paul Casey carded a level-par 72 while Nick Dougherty could only manage a 73 and Nick Faldo a 74.
