Rory McIlroy wants to focus on his amateur career |
Holywood teenager Rory McIlroy has turned down the chance to play in three big European Tour events so he can concentrate on his amateur career. The 16-year-old had invitations for the Nissan Irish Open, the British Masters and the Smurfit European Open.
"I'll play pro events in the off-season but once the season gets going I will concentrate on amateur tournaments," McIlroy told the Irish Independent.
"My number one aim is to win the British Amateur Championship."
McIlroy admitted is had been difficult turning down the chance to play in such big tournaments.
"I had to think long and hard about it and talked it over with my dad and Neil Manchip, the national coach," said McIlroy.
"Last yeat I played Tour events during the peak season. They were great experiences but, though I am speaking from hindsight, that could have cost me a place on the Walker Cup team.
"I found it drained me, not physically but mentally."
McIlroy is in action at the West of Ireland championship at County Sligo this week. Last year he became the youngest winner of the title.
