France's Jean van de Velde put his knee problems to one side as he fired a blemish-free round of 65 to secure a share of the lead in the Madeira Open. The 39-year-old has undergone two operations on the knee in recent years, but was in fine form to go 10 under.
That placed him alongside Swede Jarno Sandelin, who shot a 68, and three shots clear of five players in third.
The group included Welshmen Bradley Dredge and Garry Houston and Scotland's former Open champion Paul Lawrie.
Ireland's Damien McGrane and Nicolas Colsaerts complete the group, while Tom Whitehouse and Sam Walker lead England's challenge on six under.
Van de Velde, whose triple bogey at the last cost him the 1999 Open at Carnoustie, was delighted after holing five birdies and an eagle, saying: "It was very rewarding.

"I've been playing well and my game has been pretty good recently.
"I have to be extremely careful because of the knee, but it is something I have learned to live with and I feel fine going into the weekend."
Five-time European Tour winner Sandelin said: "When you have never been disciplined on the course, it is hard work. I am trying to stay calm and not be too offensive.
"It is a matter of sticking to the game plan, no matter what."
Meanwhile, England's Kenneth Ferrie, attempting to hold onto his ninth place in the Ryder Cup standings, shot a 73 to follow his first-found 75 and missed the cut.
