Sweden's Jarmo Sandelin enjoyed a rare bogey-free round when he shot a 66 to take a two-shot lead after the first day of the Madeira Island Open. Sandelin, who played in the 1999 Ryder Cup, leads a group of five players that includes Scotland's former Open champion Paul Lawrie.
Niclas Fasth, who needs a victory to have any chance of sealing a place at next month's Masters, shot a 70.
And England's Kenneth Ferrie shot a disappointing 75.
Ferrie is trying to keep his ninth place in the Ryder Cup standings.
Sandelin has won five times on the tour, including this event in 1996, but has not won since the 2002 Asian Open.
He has missed four cuts in his seven events this year.
