Brett Wetterich clinched his maiden PGA Tour title by a stroke at the Byron Nelson Championship in Texas. One off the pace at the start of the day, the 32-year-old from Ohio fired a two-under-par 68 to finish on 12 under.
Trevor Immelman, co-leader overnight with Adam Scott, had moved two strokes clear at the turn chasing a first Tour win but faded over the closing holes.
Australian Scott also slumped, making three consecutive bogeys from the eighth on his way to a scrappy 71.
South Africa's Immelman dropped three shots in six holes from the 10th and eventually had to settle for second place at 11 under with a 70.
It was his second big disappointment in the space of a week.
Last Sunday, Immelman lost the Wachovia Championship in a play-off to Jim Furyk after three-putting the final green.
"I'm playing the best golf of my life," he said after the end of the tournament. "I'm 26 years old and I'm going to have hundreds of golf tournaments to play still.
"It's just a case of trying to build on these last few achievements."
American Omar Uresti, meanwhile, twice held a share of the lead before finishing in a tie for third at 10 under with Scott after shooting a 68.
Luke Donald, eighth with a round to go, lost his chance when he bogeyed the ninth and 10th.
But he birdied the 13th and 14th and made an eagle putt of nearly 20 feet on the long 16th to climb into a tie for sixth spot.
Londoner Brian Davis was joint eighth a stroke further back on seven under following a 65.
Fiji's world number four Vijay Singh, the event's highest-ranked player, finished level after a 73 that included an eagle, three straight birdies, a triple bogey, a double and three other bogeys.
