Tom Watson powered his way to a one-shot lead over fellow American Craig Stadler after the third round of the Senior British Open on Saturday.

The 55-year-old dropped just a single stroke as he carded a 64 to equal the course record in Aberdeen set earlier in the day by England's Derrick Cooper.

Stadler shot a one-under 70 to slide back to second on two under.

Ireland's Des Smyth and Australian Greg Norman shared third in less windy conditions than in previous rounds.

Watson, who won the tournament in 2003, had started the day five strokes off the lead.

But birdies at the third and fifth plus an eagle three at the sixth put him right back in contention.

"It was the first time in a long time I made some putts," said Watson.

"I hit the ball well, the best I've driven it in two days."

Cooper had set the clubhouse pace after carding a bogey-free 64, which included a string of five consecutive birdies around the turn.

The Warrington man shares fourth spot with American Loren Roberts on four over.

"I didn't think anything was going to happen but I made a great up-and-down at six that sparked me off and then had a good run."
