PGA Tour rookie JB Holmes blew away his rivals to claim a seven-shot victory at the Phoenix Open in Scottsdale.

The American, 23, was just one ahead at the start of the day but eagled the par-five 15th on his way to a five-under-par 66 in Arizona.

Holmes, who turned professional last year after a successful college career and was only competing in his fifth PGA Tour event, finished on 21 under.

American Ryan Palmer was in contention until a triple-bogey eight on 15.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson birdied five of the last six holes for a 66 and a tie for seventh at 13 under.

I want to win another one
JB Holmes

Holmes said he was hungry for more success following his surprise win.

"That was one of my goals, to win out here," he said.

"I didn't think it would happen so quickly. I knew I had the ability, but I am still surprised it happened this fast.

"I want to win another one. You don't see a guy enter a tournament thinking he doesn't want to win. They want to win every week. I am the same way."
