Woods, Olazabal and Australian rookie Nathan Green went into the play-off after they all tied on 10 under.

Green bogeyed the first extra hole to drop out of the contest and then Woods parred the second before Olzabal pushed his putt wide from just four feet.

The victory saw 30-year-old Woods win the title for a record fourth time.

Green and Woods both posted a final round of 72 to make the play-off while Olazabal closed with a 69 to move into contention.

Nerves got the better of Green, 30, as he scuffed a second chip shot out of the rough to run up a bogey six on the trio's return to the 18th.

Woods had a seven-foot birdie putt chance but pulled his attempt wide to join Olazabal at the second extra hole on the 16th.

The Spaniard made an excellent chip out of the sand to within three feet of the pin but, after watching Woods safely make par, he pulled his putt wide to hand the world number one the win.

"It was bunched out there and quite frankly I probably shouldn't have been in the play-off," said Woods.

"I just hung in, hung in there but it's not how you want to win. You don't ever take joy out of seeing friends do that."

India's Arjun Atwal tied for fourth after he narrowly missed out on a place in the play-off when he skewed a five-foot putt at the last wide.

Joint overnight leader Sergio Garcia ruined his chances by dropping seven shots on his way to a closing round of 75.

He finished in joint eighth place alongside US PGA champion Phil Mickelson, who returned a 73.

Green had been two clear of the field after sinking an eagle at the 13th but he slipped back at the 15th and surrendered his overall lead at the 17th.

Woods, Green and Olazabal all birdied the final regulation hole to set up the gripping finish.

"There's nothing to be disappointed about," Green said. "I've been an overachiever for the week."
