Clarke says golf not his priority
Darren Clarke
Darren Clarke is back in action at the European Open
Darren Clarke is not setting himself any targets as he makes his comeback at this week's Smurfit European Open at the K Club near Dublin.

Clarke has taken time off to be with his wife Heather, who has cancer, and has not played since the second round of the BMW Championship at Wentworth.

He also missed the US Open at Pinehurst last week.

"I don't have any expectations at the moment - they are not overly important to me right now," said the Ulsterman.

"Heather is doing OK at the moment. The drugs she took after the chemotherapy had a serious adverse effect on her heart, but she has turned the corner and is recovering slowly at home.

"At the moment I'm playing in the Scottish Open next week and the Open, but it's all up in the air and depends on how Heather progresses.

"We were told it was unbelievably rare for anybody to have a reaction to the drug, which was to treat the remnants of the cancer, and it's now been stopped. Her health went rapidly downhill."

In the four weeks since then, Clarke, a father of two young boys, said he has managed just "an hour here and an hour there" to work on his game.

"It will be good to get back, and particularly in Ireland at a course and tournament I have always enjoyed playing," he said.
