Brian McElhinney claimed victory in the final at Royal Birkdale

The 22-year-old former European champion from the North West club was three up on the surprise Scottish finalist after nine holes.

McElhinney was now in control and in blustery conditions he went on to hold a four hole lead after 18.

The Donegal player went five up at the 29th as he eased to victory.

Waiting for McElhinney, the fourth Irishman to win the title, are places in the Open and next April's Masters at Augusta.

"It's going to take a while to sink in," he said. "I was very nervous. I couldn't eat properly all day and I had about three hours sleep last night."

McElhinney started as favourite against Gallagher, the uncapped 24-year-old with an unconventional cross-hand grip.

"I just ran out of gas at the end, but it's been a brilliant week," said Gallagher.
