Vijay Singh became the first player to retain the Houston Open after winning a play-off with John Daly. Singh tapped in an 18-inch par putt to claim victory at the first extra hole after Daly's tee shot found water.
However the triumph was not enough for the Fijian to claim the world number one spot from Tiger Woods.
Singh and Daly both finished the event on 13-under-par, Jose Maria Olazabal was third while Darren Clarke and Greg Owen ended up three shots off the lead.
Singh, who began the final day tied with Gavin Coles on 11 under, had a relatively quiet day and carded only two birdies on the 14th and 15th.
He had chances to post a better score than his 70 but missed some vital putts. "I was putting well, the lines were just really difficult to read," he said.
"I'm really pleased with the way I hung in there and never gave up.
"Fortunately for me nobody came out of the pack except for John and kind of made a run at it. It was a good way to finish."
Daly, who started the day tied for sixth, birdied three of his final four holes to post the 67 that would force the play-off but was disappointed with how the event ended.
"I'm proud of myself for coming back like that and hitting some shots when I needed to," he said. "I wished I could have done better in the playoff."
Clarke also carded a 67 after a round which included seven birdies, the only black mark coming at the par-four 16th where he had a six.
Owen had six birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey in a mixed 72 while Brian Davis tied for seventh on eight under after a closing 70.
