Greg Owen fired a second-round 69 to reach the halfway stage of the Houston Open just two shots off the lead.

The 33-year-old Englishman had four birdies and a bogey to end up on eight under, two strokes behind leaders Brett Quigley and Australian Gavin Coles.

First-round leader Vijay Singh added a 71 to his stunning 64 on the opening day and is with John Daly, Jeff Maggert and Joe Ogilvie on nine under.

Darren Clarke and Brian Davis are in a group of nine players on 140.

Clarke, who had five birdies and two bogeys in an eventful front nine, carded a 69 while Davis had the same score despite having a seven at the par-four 17th.

However, fellow Britons David Howell, Phillip Price and John Elliott all missed the cut.

Price was in line to feature in the final two rounds but dropped five shots in the final five holes to put him out of contention.

Quigley claimed a share of the lead after claiming his second straight 67 with the help of three birdies in his final nine holes.

Coles, who played on the Nationwide Tour last year after struggling on the PGA Tour as a rookie in 2003, had a mixed round of five birdies and two bogeys.

Despite Singh not being able to match the fireworks of the opening day, the world number two was satisfied to be one shot behind the leaders.

"I hung in there. It was one of those days that could have gone either way, and I just stayed very steady and played each hole at a time," he said.

"I guess the other guys out there would have taken one under.

"I am playing well, feel good about my golf. I am not struggling. It was one of those days.

"You can't go out and shoot 64 every day. You just have to take what you get and keep plugging along."
