Ireland's Paul McGinley has been named the European Tour's player of the month for October following his win at the season-ending Volvo Masters. The 38-year-old pulled off the biggest victory of his 14-year European Tour career when he came from four strokes behind at Valderrama.
McGinley pipped Sergio Garcia and new European number one Colin Montgomerie.
"To be voted Golfer of the Month in recognition of the victory simply puts the icing on the cake," he said.
"What pleased me most about winning the Volvo Masters was the size of the title and how I successfully moved up mentally to compete at the highest level."
McGinley, who sank the winning putt in the Ryder Cup at The Belfry in 2002, is almost guaranteed a third cap at the K Club near Dublin next September.
"Was it better than the Ryder Cup putt?" he said.
"Well it was different. It was selfish. This one was for Paul McGinley."
A panel comprising European Tour players and journalists chooses the award, which is presented each month to honour the best performance by a member on the European Tour and in worldwide competition.
