McGinley faces surgery after win
Paul McGinley
Paul McGinley revealed he could be out of action for 10 weeks over the winter after triumphing at the Volvo Masters.

The 38-year-old Irishman goes into hospital on Monday for a scan on his knee and could face surgery for the second season in a row.

"It returned this week and it looks like I'm going to have to have an operation," said McGinley.

McGinley is third in the Ryder Cup standings and third in the final Order of Merit after his win in Valderrama.

The three near-misses this year really hurt me - I was devastated after losing the final of the World Match Play

McGinley, whose last tournament victory was four years ago, said it went some way towards making up for a season of near-misses.

He lost the final of the World Match Play to Michael Campbell last month and also came close to winning the BMW Championship and NEC World Championship.

"I am so pleased to win a title of this size and to do it in the style I did," said McGinley.

"Those three near-misses this year really hurt me - I was absolutely devastated after losing the final of the World Match Play.

"I put a lot of what happened in those losses into practice and that I was able to do it means a huge, huge, huge amount to me."

McGinley's win lifted him to world number 18, his highest ever position.
