Former Ryder Cup star Paul Broadhurst fired a second-round 66 at Pula to lead on day two of the Mallorca Classic.

Broadhurst, who won in Portugal earlier this year, edged to seven under to hold off fellow Ryder Cupper Jose Maria Olazabal, who scorched round in 65.

France's Gregory Havret was on his own in third on five under after a 66.

Swede Jarmo Sandelin, who played in the 1999 Ryder Cup, made the cut on the mark and needs a top-four finish to keep his European Tour card.

The pain is over - a new life as a taxi driver begins

Sandelin feared the worst when he went out of bounds and triple-bogeyed the 12th, then three-putted the last for a 73.

"The pain is over - a new life as a taxi driver begins," he said as he handed in his scorecard.

But nearly five hours later the cut went to four over par and he survived right on the limit.

"I was out of bounds twice today and that cost me four shots," added Sandelin, 140th in the standings.

"My new swing is so much better and I'm hitting many, many more brilliant shots, but it's like somebody is playing the destiny game with me."

Broadhurst, who played in the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island before twice visiting qualifying school to get his card back, bagged four birdies in his first seven holes.

It would be a thrill after three years without a win to win anywhere but it would be very special to win here
Jose Maria Olazabal

The 40-year-old handed a stroke back at eight to reach the turn in 32 and three straight birdies from the 10th maintained his momentum and cushioned the blow of a double-bogey six on the 14th.

"I've got a good record round here," said Broadhurst, 28th on the Order of Merit.

"My only concern was I missed the cut last week and I wasn't playing too well.

"It's funny how it happens. One day I can't hit the ball and the next I'm leading the tournament.

"It's a roller coaster out there. I hit some smelly shots on the back nine but I managed to survive."

Two-time Masters champion Olazabal, who recently redesigned the course, shot the day's low round which included six birdies and a solitary dropped shot.

"It would be a thrill after three years without a win to win anywhere but it would be very special to win here," said the Spaniard. "This is now a tough course, especially the back nine.

"But when we finish, hopefully the opinion will be that the course was tough but fair."

Locked on four under with England's Simon Kahn (69) were Swede Mattias Eliasson (68), Portugal's Jose-Filipe Lima (68) and Australian Wade Ormsby (66).

Running alongside the battle for the victory in Mallorca is the fight to keep careers going.

With only the elite-field Volvo Masters next week - the top 60 in Europe qualify - the Mallorca event represents the last chance to scrape inside the top 115 on the Order of Merit who automatically retain their cards and avoid Tour School.

With a best finish of 19th all season, Eliasson, ranked 144th in Europe, is one of the players fighting for his livelihood but is well poised for the top-four finish he needs to stay on Tour.
