Woosnam willing for Faldo to play
Nick Faldo
Faldo will have to wait until 2008 to take the reins
Europe's newly-appointed Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam has said he would have no problem with Nick Faldo joining the side as a player in 2006.

Woosnam has been appointed to lead Europe in 2006, while Faldo - who also wanted the job at the K Club - will take the reins in 2008.

"If Nick puts his mind to it, then you've got to consider him," Woosnam told BBC Radio Five Live.

"If he plays well in enough tournaments he'd be a great man to have there."

Faldo recently admitted he was unhappy that the selection committee had failed to contact him to find out his availability for the 2006 post.

The 47-year-old has scored 25 points in a record 11 Ryder Cups, although he has not featured as a player since his role in Europe's win at Valderrama in 1997.

He made 11 consecutive appearances in the Ryder Cup between 1977 and 1997 and has won the most points in the history of the event with 25.

Woosnam admitted he was worried about losing out to Faldo for the 2006 job.

"When you have a fantastic golfer like Nick going against you, you just don't know what's going to happen," he said.

"But I'm glad they've made the decision to give him the 2008 job."
