James backs Woosnam for Ryder Cup

James captained Europe at Brookline in 1999
Former Ryder Cup captain Mark James has backed Ian Woosnam to lead the European team at the K Club in Ireland in 2006.

With Bernhard Langer having ruled himself out for a second stint, Woosnam and Nick Faldo are the main contenders.

An announcement by the European Tour is expected on 2 March, and James thinks the Welshman would be best this time, with Faldo in charge in the US in 2008.

"I think Woosie is the best candidate for the next Ryder Cup, and probably Nick for the next one," he said.

"I think we need a more emotive person to connect with the home crowd," he added.

"That is more of an asset for a home Ryder Cup and I think someone with a more detached, clinical mindset is better over there.

"I think that sort of describes both men's personalities."
