Tiger Woods caught Tom Lehman at the top of the Buick Invitational leaderboard before play was again halted because of darkness. Woods, who completed his second round on Saturday morning, had to wait six hours before starting the third round as fog rolled in across the course.
He then fired two birdies in his opening five holes to reach 14 under before play was suspended.
Lehman saw his lead disappear when he dropped a shot at the first.
Britain's Luke Donald, who started the third round on nine under, moved to within three shots of the lead with two birdies in the five holes he squeezed in before play was halted.
He is tied for third with Australian Peter Lonard, who was also only able to complete five holes.
South African Ernie Els is on 10 under after five holes while world number one Vijay Singh moved to eight under with four birdies in the 12 holes he was able to finish.
Phil Mickelson, making his 2005 PGA Tour debut, continued to struggle and was four over after 11 holes to put him on one under overall.
And after two delays on Saturday due to fog, the players will return to complete their third round on Sunday morning.
Woods, who had made nine birdies and one bogey on Friday before fog brought an early end, had only one hole complete on Saturday morning and was able to claim a birdie for a 63.
He then started the third round in spectacular style with a birdie at the 10th, his first, before chipping in from a bunker at the next.
Lehman however, struggled and missed a six-foot birdie putt at the first.
He then had to make two eight-foot putts, one for birdie and the other bogey.
"It's pretty strange but what can you do, just wait around and hope for the best," said Lehman.
Meanwhile American Dean Wilson was disqualified for failing to sign his card after completing his second round.
