United States Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman overcame heavy fog to maintain his lead after a disrupted second round at the Buick Invitational.

Lehman carded a five-under 67 on the difficult south course to move to 15 under and match the 36-hole record.

The field had to contend with a thick layer of fog which delayed play for over three hours and 75 players have yet to complete the second round.

Lehman is three shots ahead of Peter Lonard who still has one hole to play.

World number Tiger Woods had a superb day and fired nine birdies to reach 11 under overall when bad light stopped play.

Briton Luke Donald is six shots off the lead after an impressive 67, which included four birdies and an eagle at the last.

South African Ernie Els, who will take second spot if he finishes ahead of Woods at the Torrey Pines Country Club, fired a disappointing one-under 71 to end up one shot further back.

Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia have a lot of work to do after finishing 10 shots off the pace while Vijay Singh is on three under with a hole to play.

Lehman, who took advantage of the easier north course on the opening day, admitted the delay may have worked in his favour and was able to finish the round with four straight birdies.

"I was struggling a bit with my swing, and I went to the range and hit balls for an hour and a half, and felt like I got my rhythm back," he said.

"I think your good golf comes when you're not thinking about the results.

"You're just thinking about executing. I think I made 19 birdies in 36 holes. That's without question a personal best for me."
