Colin Montgomerie's bid for a first strokeplay title in America ended in frustration as Tiger Woods prevailed in the Target World Challenge.

Woods, the tournament host, finished two shots clear of Ireland's Padraig Harrington, both players shooting 66s.

Montgomerie, who led by two shots overnight, could only manage a level-par 71 to finish joint third with Jay Haas, three shots adrift.

Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez was a further two shots back on 11 under.

Woods, who won his first strokeplay event of the season with an eight-shot victory in Japan last month, is delighted with his return to top form.

"I was very comfortable with my swing," he said. "Every shot I wanted to hit, I hit.

He seems to be getting things back

"I had to take baby steps all year. I was working in the right direction.

"Sometimes, it might have been just three or four holes in one round that I played great, and then the rest of it wasn't so good.

"Eventually it became nine holes, then 18, then 36 and 54. Now it's a whole tournament. It's exciting."

Woods missed only one green and two fairways for perhaps his most complete round of the year, on a pristine day at Sherwood Country Club.

"Looking at him, he seems to be getting things back," said runner-up Harrington, who went out in 31 to move into contention before faltering over the closing holes.

The Irishman is looking forward to more duels with the former world number one when he spends more time on the American circuit next year.

"I'm going to come over and play more from March to June - six or seven more events than I did last year in the same period.

"I felt I wasn't game-sharp last year, so I'll play more early on in the year and see how I do at the end of the year."
