Montgomerie is in good form |
Colin Montgomerie and Tiger Woods both shot five-under-par 66s to hold a two-stroke lead over an elite field at the Target World Challenge in California. The Scot and the tournament host, joint leaders with Jim Furyk overnight, reached halfway at nine under overall.
Americans Furyk - who posted a 68 - and Jay Haas, one of four players to score 66, are the closest challengers.
World number one Vijay Singh recovered from an opening 74 with a 69 but is still 10 shots off the pace.
Davis Love III also shot a 66 to join Chris Marco (67) on six under, three strokes behind the leaders.
Ryder Cup members Padraig Harrington and Miguel Angel Jimemez, who both posted 69s, are a shot further back.
Montgomerie made seven birdies - five on the front nine - with two bogeys coming home, while Woods posted six birdies and a bogey.
"It is different to play with Tiger," the Scot said afterwards. "I've just got to concentrate on my own game, that's all you do.
"I'm not going to beat Tiger. I'm not going to out-drive him, I'm not going to hit better iron shots and I'm not going to chip the ball better and I'm not going to putt better.
"The only way I'm going to beat Tiger is by scoring well."
