Tiger Woods could only card a 72 at Royal Troon on Sunday as his drought in majors stretched to nine.

The world number one had two birdies on the front nine but three bogeys on the back nine derailed his challenge.

The 28-year-old American continued to scramble well, but his driving and approach play let him down.

With a place in the top-16 assured, Woods will hold on to his number one ranking, but he has not now won a major since the 2002 US Open.

Woods denied that his game was in decline after finishing tied for ninth.

He said: "I felt that I played well but I just made too many mistakes. I didn't make any high numbers but I didn't make a lot of birdies either.

"I had a chance this week and felt that I could have won this tournament today - and I should be happy about that.

"But obviously I didn't win so I will have to take a look at where I went wrong and rectify the mistakes I made."
