Colin Montgomerie was unable to make the score his legions of fans were praying for on Sunday, as he carded a 76 for a finishing total of two over.

The Scotsman was given a rapturous welcome on the first tee as he resumed at three under, five shots adrift.

He birdied the long fourth but was unable to add any others.

Double-bogeys at the 13th and 17th denied any hope of the top-10 finish that would have ensured qualification for next year's Open.

"I can still win this championship one day if it all goes my way," Montgomerie said defiantly. "I wouldn't say this was a chance lost.
