Levet, Weir challenge fades
By Matt Slater and Alistair Watkins
BBC Sport at Royal Troon

Vijay Singh
Thomas Levet conjured up an eagle but could failed to get his hands on the Claret Jug after finishing with a 72 for a five-under 279 total at Troon.

The eccentric Frenchman, in joint third overnight, lept to eight under and a share of second place after his eagle feat at the par-five fourth hole.

His round started to go wrong at the devilishly awkward short eighth.

And two further bogeys sent him further down the leaderboard to an eventual tie for fifth place.

He said: "The course was playing difficult and I'm happy with the week. It's been a very tiring week and being in the lead quite a long way is demanding.

"To finish fifth is very good. The last two weeks have been brilliant.

"I'm happy to get Ryder Cup points. I've taken a big step forward and I'm happy with my form."

Canada's Mike Weir looked like he might challenge for the Open after a strong opening, but a poor inward nine saw him slip back to three over.

The 2003 Masters champion moved from four under to six under after eight solid holes.

But, seeking to pull off a few more birdies, he risked too much and dropped shots at the ninth and 10th.

A double bogey at the 14th increased his problems before a birdie at 16 helped him complete a round of 71.

Fiji's Vijay Singh brought his campaign to a close at one over after a final round of 71.

You can't be making so many simple mistakes in majors

The world number three, who finished tied for second at Royal St George's last year, failed to find any consistency as the gusty wind took its toll.

Singh hit four birdies and three bogeys in the outward nine to move to level par, but three bogeys on the way home took him back to one over.

"I'm disappointed," said Singh. "I just have to go and rethink what I need to do.

"You can't be making so many simple mistakes in majors."
