An extraordinary day of golf
Ken Brown
By Ken Brown
BBC Sport golf commentator

What an astonishing day of golf. Say what you want about the game, but you could never call it predictable.

For my money, Scott Drummond's victory here is on par with Ben Curtis' win at the Open Championship last year - breathtaking.

For a rookie to arrive at the Volvo PGA, Europe's biggest event after the Open, and play with such composure and poise is unusual to say the least.

I think it shows how far golf has progressed. There was a time in years gone by when someone like that would have lost his belief and crumbled under the pressure.

He got a few lucky breaks, and some of the bigger players didn't perform, but Scott played extraordinarily good golf.

Most of the crowd were following Darren Clarke and Nick Faldo, leaving Scott to work his way around the course in relative peace.

He holed a couple of monsters at the 13th and 17th which threw him into the mix.

I nearly flew out of the commentary box when he birdied the 17th - I'm not sure Peter Alliss knew what was happening.

He got his strategy right and didn't change his plan, even when he was heading down towards the 18th.

Bizarrely he claimed he didn't know what the score was when he reached the final green - I know I could never resist sneaking a look at the board - but he kept focused on his game.

He'll find his life has been transformed

Some cynics may argue that with modern technology it's easier for poor players to compete with the best, but that's a load of tosh.

When you get to this level it's not about the driver or club, it's all to do with your self belief and ability - which Scott Drummond clearly has in abundance.

Cabrera threatened, but Scott always had that extra shot in his arsenal.

He was hoping to keep his tour card this season - now he'll find his life has been transformed.

He'll have an exemption, enough money to pay off his mortgage, look after his wife and new baby and there's even the chance to make the Ryder Cup side on the horizon.

You couldn't have had a stronger field here, and I don't think anyone performed particularly badly.

The fact is 19 under is a terrific score - whatever the event. It would have taken an exceptional round of golf to beat it.

And it was a wonderful way to mark the end of Volvo's sponsorship of this event, which they have admirably supported over the years.

Professional golf relies on sponsorship, and if there is a company out there that wants to get involved in golf I can't think of a better tournament to back.
