Angel Cabrera edged into a one-shot lead after the third round of the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth thanks to a late surge on the back nine.

The 34-year-old Argentine put together a birdie-birdie-eagle run to move ahead of overnight leader Justin Rose, who was one of four players one shot back.

Scotland's Scott Drummond, making his debut, Joakim Haeggman and Darren Fichardt joined Rose on 11 under.

Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke had a mixed day to finish in sixth place.

The 36-year-old was on song, sinking an eagle at the 12th and two birdies, until he came unstuck at the last.

Clarke hooked his shot into a bush and was forced to take a penalty drop for a bogey six.

Playing partner Ernie Els also had his share of bad luck and slipped from joint second to seventh after a level-par 72.

Nick Faldo sits next to the South African world number three on the leaderboard after a useful round of 68.

But Colin Montgomerie's fortune did not improve as he went round in 73 to finish off the pace on three under.

The Scot, who has been off-form since announcing the break-up of his marriage, needs a top-five finish to qualify for next month's US Open.

Leading British challenger Rose was in confident mood despite failing to consolidate his overnight advantage.

"It's encouraging to be only one off the lead," said the 23-year-old.

"It comes down to the putter. It's best not to dwell on it right now because I hit a lot of good putts that didn't go in."
