Spain's Sergio Garcia has won his first US Tour event in two years with a play-off victory at the Byron Nelson Championship in Texas.

Garcia had completed the 72 holes level with American duo Dudley Hart and Robert Damron at 10-under par.

But the Spaniard then clinched the win when he holed a short par putt on the first play-off hole.

World number one Tiger Woods finished a further stroke behind for a share of fourth place.

Garcia, whose last win on the USPGA Tour was in the 2002 Mercedes Championship, had gone into the final round with a two-shot advantage after a third round of 65.

But his leading rivals closed the gap following his stuttering round of 71, which included bogeys on the second and eighth and paved the way for sudden death.

On the opening play-off hole - the 18th - Hart made a mess of his drive. After a poor ensuing pitch, he eventually finished with a double bogey six.

Garcia drove into the rough and his subsequent approach shot was some 40 feet short of the pin.

Then his initial putt fell just two feet short but he was given the chance to seal the win after Damron missed a simple tap-in.

The American's three-foot effort went well wide of the hole and Garcia picked up the 600,000 winner's cheque following his tap-in.

Afterwards Garcia said: "It was a difficult day. I hit a lot of good shots, but the wind was tricky. I hit a lot of good shots that didn't end up as close as I thought they should have.

"I really don't like the fact I played that badly. I tried to play aggressive but smart. I was trying to leave myself putts of 15 to 20 feet for birdie and then trying to hole some of them."

Of the other top names, South Africa's Ernie Els finished seventh after carding a 67, level with Zimbabwe's Nick Price.
