Europe's Ryder Cup debutants Paul Casey and David Howell held their nerve for a morale-boosting 1-up fourballs triumph over Jim Furyk and Chad Campbell.

They secured the holders' only full point of the session despite losing a two-hole lead and trailing as Furyk hit three straight birdies from the 11th.

The English duo led first with Howell's birdie at the sixth, and Casey extended the advantage four holes later.

Furyk responded, before Howell levelled twice and Casey sealed the win on 18.

Since America started taking on Europe rather than just Britain and Ireland in 1979 it was the first time that two Europeans playing their first-ever game had combined for a point.

European captain Bernhard Langer hailed the debutants after their victory ensured his side were 8-4 ahead as the action swiftly moved on to the foursomes.

"We were down all morning and that was just huge for us, very important," said Langer.

" We are doing great, we are in the lead and I'm so proud of those rookies."

Casey, who holed the winning putt on the 18th green, felt he and Howell were worthy winners.

The 27-year-old Englishman said: "We hung in there and I think we deserved it. David and I played great all day and we dovetailed nicely.

"It's only justice, we really played our hearts out and put up with a lot of noise out there."
