Montgomerie may have to qualify for this summer's Open |
Colin Montgomerie has flown back to Britain after pulling out of the VW China Masters because of problems in his personal life. Recently there has been speculation about the state of his marriage.
Montgomerie's spokesman said: "The decision to leave the tournament is for personal reasons.
"He simply made the decision that he would be better off being at home. He has not said that this is about a problem with his marriage."
The decision to fly home comes at a difficult time for Montgomerie professionally as he may have to qualify for this summer's Open Championship.
The top 50 players in the world rankings automatically qualify for the tournament, which will be played at Troon, where Montgomerie was raised.
Montgomerie is ranked only 44th in the world, despite winning the Singapore Masters in March.
