Mike Weir gave his home crowd a boost with a superb 66 to lead world number one Vijay Singh by one stroke after two rounds of the Canadian Open.

Former Masters champion Weir birdied his final hole to huge cheers from the gallery and leads on nine under par.

Singh was among around half the field able to complete second rounds as play was suspended due to light, breaking an event record with 28 on the front nine.

The Fijian completed his second round in 66 to move to eight under.

"I just started hitting it close, and all of a sudden I noticed it was 28," said Singh. "I was just trying to get it back as close to par as possible."

Weir admitted he would have to improve further to hold off Singh.

"He's playing the best of anyone," said Weir. "He's number one in the world for a reason.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to find the magic tomorrow. Today could not have gone much better."

Canadian Craig Barlow had a 69 and was at six under, with American Ryder Cup stars Stewart Cink and Chris DiMarco on three under.
