Masters champion Phil Mickelson carded a five-under 67 on Saturday to climb into contention at the USPGA. The crowd favourite made a blistering start, reaching the turn in 31 shots, of which only 10 were putts.
The 34-year-old American's progress was halted when he bogeyed the par-five 11th, and only one more birdie followed in the remaining seven holes.
But a superb up-and-down at the last kept Mickelson at eight under and in touch with leader Vijay Singh.
"It was a good round," said Mickelson, who is attempting to become the first player to finish inside the top three of all four majors in a season.
"I would have taken five under, but I was hoping for seven (under) at the start of the day.
"At least I have a chance. I could go play a solid round tomorrow. I know I could shoot quite a few under par on this golf course. If I can do that, I should have a good opportunity."
Alongside Mickelson are South African Ernie Els, Canada's Stephen Ames, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke and fellow American Chris Riley.
The Las Vegan came home in 33 to give himself a great chance of forcing his way into Hal Sutton's Ryder Cup team.
