Langer has played in five Ryder Cups |
Bernhard Langer could still give up the Ryder Cup captaincy if he is in a position to qualify for the team. Langer has been chosen to lead the European team at Oakland Hills in Detroit next year as they try to retain the trophy won at The Belfry last September.
The German admitted last month that he had been torn between accepting the job and trying to play his way into the team.
And while he has now conceded it is impossible to combine the roles of player and captain, the veteran has not abandoned the dream of equalling Nick Faldo's record of 11 cup appearances.
"I have not ruled anything out, it's too far away," said Langer.
"We need the top 12 players to be in the team, that's the priority. If I have a brilliant year and am one of the top five players in the world ranking or money list, I might consider it and have someone else take over." Langer has also decided not to choose his vice-captain until May or June next year as they too may be trying to qualify for the team.
And he revealed all 12 members of his team would play at least once before Sunday's singles, following the example set by Sam Torrance last year.
Former captain Mark James controversially chose not to play Andrew Coltart, Jarmo Sandelin and Jean Van de Velde until the singles at Brookline in 1999, and then watched a 10-6 lead wiped out as his exhausted top-name players succumbed to their opponents.
"It's not fair to anyone who makes the team, especially rookies, to throw them in cold on Sunday without experiencing the atmosphere," Langer added.
"I will play everyone unless there is a very good reason not to."
Langer will travel to Oakland Hills at the end of September to look over the course and facilities with opposite number Hal Sutton.
