Darren Clarke playing in the pro-am on the K Club's South Course |
European Ryder Cup director Richard Hills has confirmed that the 2006 contest will be played over the K Club's older North Course. There had been speculation that the event could be staged on the impressive newly-constructed South Course at the County Kildare venue.
The South Course was officially opened on Tuesday 1 July with a charity pro-am ahead of this week's European Open and earned many glowing comments from the participants.
Hills, however, dismissed the idea of switching the Ryder Cup, stating that he felt the North Course had a better infrastructure. "We are reviewing the whole of the K Club estate for the 2006 Ryder Cup but the match takes up acres and acres of space and we understand there is a lot of housing development to come around the South Course," Hills said on Wednesday.
"That would make it quite tight and all of our plans at this time are focused on the North Course, in agreement with ourselves, and Smurfits, the K Club owners."
