The back nine
10th - 184 yards, par 3
The difficulty here is the green - the pin positions are very demanding, especially when played downwind.
There is a big slope short of the green so you want to make sure you land the ball all the way up or you're left with a chip. But it's only a seven or eight iron off the tee so most people look to make two.
11th - 403 yards, par 4
Birdie chances if you stay left on 11 |
Most players hit a driver off the tee and are only left with a sand iron or a lob wedge into the green.
A short par four but the elevated green makes distance control on the second shot difficult.
Get yourself on the fairway, a little bit more left than you think off the tee, so you're left with a big birdie chance.
12th - 509 yards, par 5
A shortish par five - driver and a long iron. The difficulty on this hole is to position yourself on the right hand side of the fairway so you are clear of the trees - it's a dogleg left. Make sure you hit a good second shot here - it's out of bounds all the way around the green. If you miss the green long and left you'll almost certainly find yourself beyond the white stakes.
13th - 467 yards, par 4
A three wood or driver off the tee, making sure you stay out of the very deep bunker on the right. A very severe dog-leg left so again you want to go right, clear of the trees. Tricky little green with a slope - make sure you stay below the hole.
14th - 179 yards, par 3
The most difficult par three at Wentworth. Severely uphill to a two-tier green. The 14th - a tough par three |
The pin will always be on the back of this green, which is a tiny plateau.
A lot of players hit it over the green and are left with a very difficult chip shot.
It's important here to get the wind right so you can control your distance and get on the right tier of this green.
15th - 481 yards, par 4
One of the finest par fours in the game of golf. A demanding tee shot with three big bunkers down the left. There is really no way around this - you've got to hit a good tee shot. You want to be straight down the middle so you're left with a shot into the sloping green from right to left.
Most try and hit a cut into this green and get themselves below the hole - you have to cut the ball to get close to the flag. Anybody that clears the hole and gets down on the lower side of the green is left with a very long putt.
16th - 383 yards, par 4
A short par four - in matchplay most players hit a three wood or driver off the tee to leave themselves with a short iron into the green. A tricky green - a lot longer than it appears from the fairway. Distance control on the second shot is key.
17th - 571 yards, par 5
The toughest driving hole in the game of golf. You have to hit a draw off the tee to keep the ball on the fairway - the danger is the out-of-bounds all the way down the left. You're left with a three wood in to a green that is way below you. You can't see the green so players will be aiming for the TV tower behind the green. A tough par five but certainly a chance of a birdie if you hit a good tee shot.
18th - 531 yards, par 5
The complete opposite to 17. A longish par five but you have to hit a cut off this tee. Two big bunkers on the left and if you find them you've no chance of reaching the green. The 18th at Wentworth provides a grandstand finish |
There is much more room to the right than you think off the tee. A good drive leaves you with a five wood or a two iron into the green.
A demanding second shot to a very narrow green. A definite chance of a birdie but one of those holes where you either make four or six.
