Vijay Singh
Singh was in sparkling form
Vijay Singh strolled to a massive 8&7 win over Germany's Alex Cejka in a sun-drenched first round of the HSBC Match Play over Wentworth's West Course.

The Fijian led by six holes at the halfway stage of the 36-hole match and sealed the victory on the 11th green.

Singh, seeded fifth, raced to nine-up after six holes after lunch but Cejka staged a brief recovery, winning the 8th and 9th before losing the 10th.

The 1997 champion began the day with a pitch-in at the 1st and remained clear all day to book a second-round match against USPGA winner Shaun Micheel.

Denmark's Thomas Bjorn overturned a three-hole deficit after 18 holes to beat American Len Mattiace 4&3.

The European Ryder Cup star hit back early in the second round to level the match after the sixth, his 24th hole.

The gutsy Bjorn took the lead for the first time with a par to Mattiace's bogey on the eighth.

And once his nose was in front he raced to four-up by the 13th before closing out the match on 15 to clinch a tie with Masters champion Mike Weir.

American Chad Campbell

American Chad Campbell completed a convincing 6&5 victory over Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson to book his place in the second round against Ben Curtis.

The sixth seed, helped by an eagle at the 497-yard fourth, raced into a five-hole lead at the halfway mark as his fellow debutant struggled in the wind.

Campbell then claimed an unassailable nine-hole lead by winning four of the first five holes after the re-start.

Jacobson pulled three back but his defeat was confirmed on the 31st hole.

South African hopeful Tim Clark showed a steely temperament to eliminate tough Australian Stephen Leaney 3&2.

Clark was two behind after seven holes but fought his way back to parity thanks to a timely birdie on the 18th.

Leaney once again moved into a two-hole lead on the second 18, but he dropped shots on the eighth, ninth and 10th to hand Clark the lead for the first time.

Clark won the 15th when Leaney slumped to another bogey and then birdied the 16th to complete a marvellous victory.
