Open course extended
2002 Open Championship winner Ernie Els
South Africa's Els won the 131st Open Championship at Muirfield
Sandwich's Royal St George's, venue for the 2003 Open Championship, will be 246 yards longer than the course on which Greg Norman triumphed in 1993.

The Kent course has been extended to 7,106 yards with a new overall par of 71.

New tees have been constructed at eight of the holes, and the 14th green has been moved back by 43 yards.

The pars of the holes are unchanged with the exception of the fourth, which has been lengthened by 29 yards and now plays as a par five.

Ernie Els won the 131st Open Championship at Muirfield and will defend his title at Royal St George's between 17-20 July.

The 1993 Open at Sandwich saw perhaps the highest quality finish of recent times.

Norman shot a fourth-round 64 to edge out Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer - a dazzling round that helped the Australian set an Open record low total of 267.
