Hoch sees light to clinch title
Ford Championship, Florida

Scott Hoch
Hoch refused to putt at the second hole of the play-off
Scott Hoch sank a seven-foot birdie putt on the third play-off hole to defeat Jim Furyk and capture the PGA Ford Championship.

It was the 11th PGA victory for the 47-year-old American, who becomes the oldest player to win a US Tour event since Tom Watson claimed the 1998 Colonial at the age of 48.

Hoch had caused an early-morning return to Doral's Blue Monster course by refusing to putt out at the second sudden-death hole on Sunday.

He insisted it had become too dark to read the line, leaving the event undecided until Monday.

"I feel sorry for the fans, but I felt it was best for me and best for Jim and I to come out and play when both of us could see," Hoch said.

"It ended up being the right decision for me."

After a 14-hour hiatus, both players returned to the green at the par-five first hole, Hoch sinking his eight-foot birdie putt and Furyk sinking his from six feet.

The action continued to the par-four 18th, where Hoch sent his ball down the middle of the fairway while Furyk's drive sailed left into a fairway bunker.

Furyk sent his approach to 25 feet from the pin, and could only get down in two.

Hoch lofted his second to within seven feet of the cup and his subsequent putt earned him $900,000 (600,000).

"I guarantee you I wouldn't have been able to do that (Sunday) night," Hoch said.

"I guess there are advantages to being old. You can go back to what you've done in the past."

FINAL ROUND SCORES (US unless stated)
-17 Scott Hoch, Jim Furyk
-15 Bob Tway
-14 Tim Petrovic
-13 Heath Slocum, Jonathan Byrd, Kenny Perry
-12 Rod Pampling (Aus), Cliff Kresge, Skip Kendall, Shaun Michael
Hoch defended his stance the previous evening, despite the boos from a gallery eager to see a result.

"I'd rather putt on what I see than what I think," he said. "My eyes aren't the greatest when it gets dark."

Co-winners were declared at last year's European Tour Volvo Masters and the Australian PGA Championship after play-offs were halted in bad light.

Furyk and Hoch both finished on 17-under-par to take the tournament into a play-off.

Britain's Nick Faldo had a disappointing final day, delivering five bogeys to finish two over for the round and four under overall.

Luke Donald also finished on four under.
