Tiger to miss Dubai trip
World number one Tiger Woods
World number one Tiger Woods has been in superb form recently

World number one Tiger Woods has withdrawn from next week's Dubai Desert Classic citing concerns over a possible conflict with Iraq.

"Although I originally intended to play this week, I have reluctantly decided to postpone my appearance until the event is staged next season," said the American.

The tournament is played on the Majlis Course, just a few miles from the Persian Gulf.

Woods added: "The organisers of the event have been extremely co-operative and supportive and I appreciate their understanding.

"They offered tremendous support and security for this proposed trip, however for the foreseeable future I felt it would be most prudent to avoid international travel."

World number two Ernie Els is now tipped to make a successful defence of his title.

"While we are disappointed with Tiger's decision to withdraw from the 2003 Dubai Desert Classic, we are delighted he has confirmed his participation for next year," said tournament vice-chairman Mohamed Ali Alabbar.
