| Tuesday, 1 October, 2002, 14:22 GMT 15:22 UK Ryder heroes set for Dunhill ![]() Paul Lawrie will be back to defend his title Victorious Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance is sure to get a warm reception when he and nine of his European team line up for the Dunhill Links championship. The cheers for Torrance and Colin Montgomerie are likely to be loudest as they return to Scottish soil after their exploits at The Belfry. The other European heroes taking part are Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinlay, Lee Westwood, Phillip Price, Pierre Fulke, Niclas Fasth and Thomas Bjorn. Open champion Ernie Els and former Masters and USPGA winner Vijay Singh will be among other big names on the show at the 3.2m event. Other former major winners competing in Scotland for the 514,000 first prize on 3-6 October include defending champion Paul Lawrie, Nick Faldo, Retief Goosen and Jose Maria Olazabal. The richest tournament on the European Tour outside the Majors and the world championship events will be played over St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingbarns.
The field is reduced to 60 pros and 20 teams after 54 holes. Among the well-known names from the world of sport who will be involved are footballers Sir Bobby Charlton, Alan Hansen, Johann Cruyff, Marco Van Baasten, Gianluca Vialli, Kenny Dalglish and Gary Lineker. Other sporting celebrities include Boris Becker, Ian Botham, Zinzan Brooke, Kapil Dev, Darren Gough, Gavin Hastings, Franz Klammer, Michael Lynagh, Nigel Mansell and Sir Steve Redgrave. There are also sure to be famous faces from the world of entertainment present. Actors Michael Douglas, Samuel L Jackson, Kurt Russell and Hugh Grant were among the competitors last time. Last year's inaugural event was dogged by bad weather and handicap rows, while attendances were poor as the competition was forced into a fifth day with a Monday finish. With a bigger field this year, play is in danger of being even slower and organisers can only keep their fingers crossed when it comes to the vagaries of the Scottish weather in October. |
