David Beckham has been voted the sports personality of the year.... in Wales.

The England captain beat off a host of Welsh stars - including his Manchester United team-mate Ryan Giggs - to win the trophy, voted for by viewers of a children's TV programme.

A spokesman for Welsh channel S4C, which screens the Uned 5 show, admitted the result came as a bit of a surprise.

"This just shows that children are open-minded, it doesn't mean they support England," he said.

The toast of Wales? Maybe not

"Someone like Beckham transcends boundaries, but let's hope that if Wales do qualify for the European championships someone like Ryan Giggs or Simon Davies wins the award."

Giggs came second in the poll, with another England player, Michael Owen, third.

Whatever next, Anne Robinson given the freedom of the Valleys.

Yawn again

A college football player in America has picked up a suspension for oversleeping.

Chris Rix was denied the chance to play for Florida State against the Georgia Bulldogs when he failed to hear his alarm clock.

Rix missed a final exam as a result of his laziness - which means an automatic ban.

Florida lost the game 26-13 - suggesting a few players were sleeping on the job.
