Funny old round-up
BBC Sport Online picks out some of the quirky, offbeat or plain daft stories doing the rounds.

Getting shirty

Any visitors to Afghanistan in the near future may be surprised by the number of Bradford City fans there.

The club have responded to an appeal for football shirts for Afghanistan's new league by sending a whopping 2,400 shirts.

The fans' generosity has even prompted Prime Minister Tony Blair to send a letter of congratulation to the club.

"While many clubs have played their part in supplying kit, none has been more generous than Bradford City and its supporters," said the PM.

"I'm particularly grateful because, as with many other clubs, I know that these are hard times for Bradford City."

Thank you Terry much

And talking of generosity, John Terry could get the surprise of his life when he receives a letter from the Football Association commending his good behaviour.

Terry clearly makes a habit of giving away clothing

The Chelsea defender, who has earned a reputation as something of a hell-raiser in the last 18 months, took pity on an Everton fan during the two clubs' Premiership match last Saturday.

The 22 year old spotted one fan suffering in the freezing temperatures and offered his coat, gloves and hat.

The fan was allowed to keep the clothing when the match ended - prompting a flood of letters from Everton fans praising the gesture.

"We are always ready to acknowledge extraordinary gestures of sportsmanship," said an FA spokesman.

And since Terry is a pretty familiar figure to the FA, they should have his address on file.

Fighting fear

The real reason behind WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe's failure to secure a big fight in America has finally been revealed.

Not so hard now, eh Joe?

The Welsh fighter has admitted he is scared of flying.

"I get very nervous just thinking about flying and I stress out so much at airports that I'm a nightmare to be with," said Calzaghe.

Calzaghe turned down a flight to Newcastle, where he will defend his title on Saturday, and took a six-hour train trip instead.

Direction needed

QPR boss Ian Holloway has sent his players to see a psychologist as he attempts to halt the Hoops' alarming slump in form.

The West London side have not won for 10 games and crashed out of the FA Cup to Vauxhall Motors.

"It was to help them decide where they want to be," said Holloway.

Probably anywhere but Loftus Road after their humiliating Cup loss to the UniBond League outfit.
