Jersey is set to send 40 young athletes to the Azores next week to compete in the 14th Jeux des Iles. The games, which bring together competitors from 18 islands, are being held on the island of Sao Miguel. Jersey's chef de mission Hugh Raymond said: "The Jeux des Iles is always very tough competition for our juniors but also a fantastic experience. "It is not all about success and there is a very strong link to education and the values of the Olympic Games." "The Jeux des Iles aims to promote youth sport with a particular emphasis on mixing with other cultures as well as the fundamental principles of fair play." Jersey's is sending competitors in six of the ten disciplines on offer, with swimming, gymnastics, athletics, tennis, table tennis and sailing all represented. In 2009 Jersey finished 11th in the overall league table, out of a total of 17 competing islands. This year's competition sees the number of entrants increase to 18 member islands.
Jeux des Iles member islands: Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Guadeloupe, The Isle of Wight, Madeira, Reunion Island, Martinique, Corfu, The Azores, Canary Islands, Crete, Malta, The Balearic Islands, Korcula, Elba, Mayotte and Cape Verde.
