Fowler's 11th-hour decision to turn his back on Kevin Keegan and City has left everyone asking why.

The Daily Mirror brings the answer straight from the Leeds striker's mouth in an exclusive interview.

"I just thought that I still had something to do at Leeds," explains Fowler. "I hadn't had the chance to show the fans exactly what I can do."

But The Sun claims City had reservations about Fowler's fitness and offered a pay-as-you-play deal which left both Leeds and the player fuming.

And the Daily Mail says the City board's decision left boss Keegan on the brink of quitting the club.

Australia and Yorkshire batsman Darren Lehmann's racist outburst in the VB Series game against Sri Lanka also grabs the headlines.

"You Racist" is the headline in The Sun, which reports that anti-racism groups want Lehmann to be axed by Yorkshire.

Cricket's other big talking point, England's World Cup game in Zimbabwe, continues to attract attention.

The Daily Mail reports that Zimbabwe have told England there is no need for another safety inspection before the game.

And The Guardian notes that South African wicketkeeper Errol Stewart has become the first player to take a stand by refusing to go on an A tour to Zimbabwe.

In tennis, Tim Henman's chances of being fit for Britain's Davis Cup clash with Australia next month appear to be fading.

Several papers reveal that Henman is remodelling his serve in an attempt to stop the injury threatening his career.

And to cheer British fans even further, The Independent says Wimbledon chiefs are to make just 500 Centre Court seats rather than 2,000 available to the public for 'People's Saturday'.

And the wildest rumour of the day.... The Daily Star says Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren wants to sign Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand.
