St Mary's claim Solent title

Former Olympic silver medallist Mark Richardson was among the spectators as St Mary's powered into the Your Game national finals with a devastating display at the Solent event.

The inner-city team from Southampton ran out 3-0 winners over Portsea Youth, Barry Mason's fine finish after a flowing passing move was the highlight of the match.

But there was consolation for Portsea when they claimed a 2-1 victory over Manor Girls in the women's final.

It wasn't all bad news for Manor girls, who will be joining Portsea at the national finals after picking up the women's Fair Play trophy. Paulsgrove FC collected the men's award.

"Today's event has been awesome," said Olympic silver medallist and former European champion Richardson.

"It's great to see so much passion. It just goes to show what you can achieve when you get all these different groups of people together."

The event featured teams representing organisations which use football to help young people from difficult backgrounds.

Among them was New Town Youth, representing a project which works with young people from the black and minority ethnic persons (BME) community in inner-city Southampton.

"Football is very important when you're trying to engage young men," said team coach Sukhdev Rathore.

"As you can see today it has brought together different religions, backgrounds and beliefs. It's one of the keys to social inclusion and bringing communities together.

"There are five teams here from inner-city Southampton, which is very positive."

Alongside the football was music from 1Xtra DJ G-Money and Asian Network DJ Mentor, who handed the Best DJ award to two winners - Mark and Jordan from Townsend United.

And there was more success for Townsend United when goalkeeper Nathan Clarke picked up the Radio Five Live MVP award, along with local NACRO co-ordinator Dominic Weir.

"Football is the tool which enables me to build positive relationships with disengaged young people," said Weir.

"Today has been really well-handled, there's an excellent vibe, all the staff have had a great attitude and been very helpful and that creates the right atmosphere."

Clearly United's Alam Rahim took home the Five Live Best Commentator award.
