Pfister resigned as Togo coach before returning days later

"The Swiss didn't have a lot of chances. They just used their opportunities better than us," he said.

"We can't be happy but the team came here to learn and I think they put on a good show."

Togo endured a troubled World Cup debut, with a row over unpaid bonuses overshadowing their efforts.

"I think the players gave 100% effort but with the problems we've had, we couldn't play any better," said Pfister.

"We can only congratulate the Swiss team because they won deservedly."

With the pay dispute rumbling on, Pfister resigned shortly before Togo's first game, but returned after a plea from his squad.

Togo's players then threatened to boycott the game against Switzerland before Fifa stepped in help resolve the issue.

Following defeat to South Korea in their opening game, Togo needed at least a draw against Switzerland to have a chance of progressing to the next stage but went behind to Alex Frei's strike after 17 minutes.

However, Togo felt they should have had a chance to equalise when Emmanuel Adebayor appeared to be tripped in the box by Patrick Mueller after 35 minutes.

"The fact that we didn't get that penalty call was unbelievable," said Pfister.

"One shouldn't criticise the referee because if you do you get punished immediately.
