 Verbeek steps up after two spells as Korea's assistant coach |
South Korea have appointed Pim Verbeek as their new coach to succeed fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat. The 50-year-old was assistant to Advocaat, who will leave to coach Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
Verbeek was also the number two to Guus Hiddink when South Korea reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2002.
South Korean football official Lee Young-Moo said: "Pim has what it takes to greatly contribute to the development of Korean football."
Verbeek, who has 25 years coaching experience, has agreed a two-year contract.
After spending the majority of his playing career with Sparta Rotterdam, he began his coaching career with Netherlands Antilles.
After their success on home soil in 2002, the South Koreans disappointingly failed to advance from the group stage in Germany.
Despite their first-round exit, Advocaat was praised for stabilising the team when he was appointed in September.
Former Rangers and Holland national team coach Advocaat took over with the team following unsuccessful spells under Humberto Coelho and Jo Bonfrere.
