Scolari has led Portugal for four years

Reports in the Portuguese media suggested he was about to step down, but Scolari claimed he was close to agreeing for a new two-year deal.

"I just need to iron out a few aspects," he said. "I've no reason to leave unless a couple of things don't work out."

But he admitted a call to manage his native Brazil would be hard to refuse.

Scolari, who leads Portugal into Saturday's third place play-off with Germany, said: "If one day I were invited to lead Brazil again I have always said I'd consider it."

The Sports Daily Record newspaper suggested Scolari was going to quit as national coach on Tuesday, but Portugal president Gilberto Madail insisted that was news to him.

"I spoke to Mr Scolari and his agent around the time of the Portugal-France semi-final game and he expressed a wish to stay on," Madail said.

"Mr Scolari has given me no indication that he wants to leave. He's said more than once that he feels good in Portugal and that he'd like to stay on.

"That's been the theme of all the chats we've had and he asked me to continue our talks after the World Cup.

"Most Portuguese, including me, want him to stay on for another two years."
