 Kahn bids farewell to international football |
Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has announced his retirement from international football after his side's 3-1 win over Portugal in the World Cup. The 37-year-old Bayern Munich keeper won his 86th and final cap as the hosts claimed third spot in Stuttgart.
He said: "It was my last international match today (Saturday) and I could not have wished for a better final game for my country than this one.
"It was a great time, but you have to know when it is time to stop."
Kahn was captain of the team that reached the World Cup final in 2002, where they lost to Brazil 2-0.
And despite a blunder that led to Ronaldo's opener in the final, he won the Golden Ball award for his outstanding displays in the tournament - the first time a goalkeeper had lifted the trophy.
He made his debut in 1995 against Switzerland and featured in the European Championships in 2000 and 2004 as well as the two World Cup outings.
The appearance against Portugal was Kahn's only participation in this year's World Cup after coach Jurgen Klinsmann declared Jens Lehmann as his number one.
Kahn was denied a clean sheet when Nuno Gomes headed past him on 88 minutes.
