A nation divided on England form
David Beckham celebrates scoring England's winner against Ecuador
Did Beckham's goal gloss over an otherwise disappointing display?
England performances have always sparked debate but rarely has the verdict been as polarised as it appears to be following Sunday's 1-0 victory over Ecuador.

Whether it's the debate on how particular players are performing, the tactics and formation, or the overall perception of England's progress so far, fans and pundits alike appear to be split down the middle.

So where does the truth lie? Is getting the right result all that matters, or are England's performances a genuine cause for concern?

Here, in response to what the BBC pundits have said since the game, we gauge the reaction of fans on our 606 message board...

WINNING IS ALL THAT MATTERS

Only the English could complain about winning.

Graham Taylor is slating a team and a manager when his reign of terror ended in us not even qualifying, for crying out loud! A win is a win.

England won the rugby union World Cup by playing effective, but boring rugby. It's been a long time since 1966, and would be nice to win in style, but that just ain't gonna happen. I'd settle for a Greek-style victory, and bring it home!

Isn't it a sign of a good team when you dont play well and still win?

Baron_Refulgent
A win is a win, so I'm not really bothered about how they win. However, I also (along with a lot of other people) think they are not going to get to the final.

At the end of the day would we take three more boring 1-0 to England? Of course we would because we would have won the World Cup.

potatoman65
We deserved to win the games we have won so far, not because we played well, but because we were better than the opposing teams.

At the end of the day a win is a win and that's all that matters. I'd sooner see England play like a herd of donkeys and grind out a result than play beautiful football and lose 6-0.

I am just delighted to be where we are rather than where Holland are. I have another week of expectation and discussion. I have another week to imagine that maybe England can fluke it.

Yes I want England to play like a zillion Zico's and score goals that burst the net. But I'll live with scrappy 1-0s if that's what it takes.

The 4-5-1 worked - Carrick played well in the holding roll and given time Rooney looked dangerous as the lone striker.

IT'S DEPRESSING, WE'RE RUBBISH

GoonerTA5 - Super Henry
If England plan to score early and then defend for the rest of the game against a good team they will get found out.

Sven's tactics are making us a laughing stock, it also shows that he does not believe the squad is capable of scoring a second goal against weaker teams.

England are not going to win the World Cup playing like this. Sven has failed twice before and will fail again.

megaspindoctor
If we are just clinging on to win against teams like Equador then what chance have we got against the teams like Brazil and Argentina?

We have quality players that are capable of beating any side - Sven should have the bottle to drop the big guns that are not performing.

Anyone who has watched the majority of England matches over the last few years would know that we are playing like we always do. Yes, given our players we should be playing better, but we haven't for years so why the surprise now?

Beckham has contributed to quite a few goals recently but I look at the England team and I think it is strangulated. It is constricted.

There is no freedom, there is no expansion, there is no free-flowing football as you have seen from Mexico and Argentina and as you have seen from Germany.

I can't disagree with this assessment from Butcher.

We haven't impressed anyone - it's really demotivating as we possess the best defence and midfield in the tournament and Rooney!

oakwoodbank
Regardless of how improved Rooney's game was we will not beat Portugal playing one up front. This strategy is doomed from now on in the World Cup.

ishouldbeenglandboss
We have the best set of players in the world but can't seem to use them.

Try Lennon and A Cole as wingbacks and with three quality central defenders, Carragher, Terry and Ferdinand we don't need a silly defensive midfielder.

Becks more central with Gerrard and Lampard further forward.

Play J Cole roaming behind Walcott and Rooney. If that's not the most attacking way forward I don't know what is!?

jlange
What we are seeing at the World Cup is more of the same yet we are supposed to believe England are suddenly going to produce a top-class performance.

I would have faith if I had seen anything in the last few years to make me believe the team were capable of better things.
